Autocamper
WISH 41 » released November 2024
DIGITAL » BandcampWith buckets of melancholic charm and a cardigan collection that would make even Stephen Pastel blush, Autocamper are the perfect pop tonic to Manchester's predictable post-punk machismo. Like a Northern kitchen sink rendering of The Vaselines' call and response motif, vocal duties are shared by Jack Harkins and Niamh Purtill - their wide-eyed reflections on unrequited romances, bedroom tiffs and hungover misdemeanors effortlessly retrofits the jangle pop sounds of the '80s without the C86 revisionism.
"Summertime" is their new single and being awkward types they're releasing it when autumn is in full swing. Fueled by an unflaggingly melodic organ and spare, scratchy guitar jangle it's perfectly emblematic of Autocamper's UK-meets-NZ pop sound. "Ken Hom" is a bit spikier, perhaps more C81 than C86. Taken together they're a thrillingly fresh spin on familiar ingredients and a tantalizing hint of what their 2025 debut album has in store.
